V-Plough for a Skid Steer - When There's Really a Lot of Snow

A V-plough cuts through a deep, packed snowbank that a standard straight plough can't handle. We look at when this attachment pays off.

V-plough for a skid steer

In short: A V-plough is made of two halves joined in a V shape, cutting through a deep, dense layer of snow instead of just pushing it forward. It's especially suited to large snow volumes and tightly packed snow, where a straight plough struggles.

How does a V-plough differ from a straight plough?

A straight plough pushes snow forward and to the side evenly. That works well up to a moderate snow depth, but once there's a lot of snow and it's dense, the plough takes on too much load and the machine can struggle.

  • Cuts through rather than just pushing: the V shape splits the snow to both sides on contact, which reduces the force needed.
  • Suits dense and deep snow: where a straight plough clogs up or the machine stalls in front of the snow.
  • Versatile setup: some V-ploughs can also be set straight or at an angle, like a standard plough.

See the range on our skid steer V-ploughs page.

Who is a V-plough suited for?

  • Large car parks and industrial sites: where snow needs clearing from a large area at once.
  • Regions with heavy snowfall: where snow quickly builds into a deep, dense layer.
  • Road maintenance companies: for cutting open large snowbanks and drifts from the roadside.

What should you think about before buying?

  • Plough width and machine power: a wider plough needs more machine power to cut through the snow.
  • Mount compatibility: the plough must match the machine's quick-attach, see our loader mounts.
  • Adjustability: check whether the plough can be reset from V-shape to straight, which gives flexibility in different snow conditions.
  • Space for manoeuvring: a V-plough is longer than a straight plough, so make sure there's enough turning room around the machine.

Alongside other winter attachments

After cutting open a large volume of snow, a packed and partly frozen layer is often left behind, for which an ice bucket is suited. For de-icing after clearing, a sand spreader bucket helps.

We'll help you choose

Tell us how large an area you maintain and what the typical snow volume is in your region. We'll recommend whether a V-plough is needed or a simpler straight plough is enough. Get in touch via our contact page.
