Grading Bucket Height Extension for a Tractor - How to Increase Bucket Capacity Without Buying a New One

A bucket extension adds height and capacity to an existing grading bucket. We look at when it makes more sense than buying a bigger bucket.

Grading bucket height extension for a tractor

In short: A bucket height extension is an additional frame fitted onto an existing grading bucket that raises the height of its wall. This lets the bucket hold more material at once, without having to buy a completely new, bigger bucket.

What is a bucket extension and when do you need one?

The extension is fitted onto the back wall of an existing grading bucket, usually with bolts or a wedge. It adds extra wall height to the bucket, which stops material spilling over the top and increases capacity.

  • More capacity with the same bucket: you can carry more at once when moving lighter material (sand, soil, woodchips).
  • Cheaper than a new bucket: an extension costs considerably less than a completely new, bigger grading bucket.
  • Easy to remove: if you need a lower bucket again for a moment, for example for more precise grading work, the extension can be taken off.

See the range on our tractor grading bucket height extensions page.

When is an extension worth it, and when a new bucket?

  • If the existing bucket fits well in terms of width and mount: an extension is a sensible add-on rather than replacing the whole bucket.
  • Light material, such as woodchips or dry soil: the capacity increase from the extension won't overload the tractor, since the material is relatively light.
  • Heavy, dense material, such as wet clay: here it's worth first checking whether the tractor can handle a bigger full bucket - the extension doesn't make the material any lighter.
  • If you also need more width, not just height: then a new, wider bucket is the right choice, not an extension.

What should you think about before buying?

  • Fit to the bucket model: the extension must match the existing bucket's dimensions exactly.
  • Tractor lift capacity: more capacity means more weight in a full bucket, so check the tractor can handle it.
  • Material type: an extension pays off for lighter, bulkier material, not dense, heavy material.

The same idea applies to loaders too - see our article on the roller rake for a skid steer, which addresses ground levelling rather than capacity increase.
