In short: A side shift moves the fork carriage hydraulically from side to side, so you can place cargo precisely onto a pallet or shelf without manoeuvring the forklift back and forth and sideways each time. The attachment mounts onto the forklift's fork carriage and requires a hydraulic connection.
What problem does a side shift solve?
Normally a forklift can only get a load into an exact position by moving the whole machine: driving back and forth and sometimes repositioning several times. In a narrow warehouse or between tightly packed shelving rows, this is time-consuming and increases the risk of contact with walls and shelving.
With a side shift, you can move the forks together with the load a few centimetres to around ten centimetres sideways, at the push of a button from the cab. The forklift itself stays in place while the cargo lands exactly where it needs to.
Who benefits from this?
- Narrow warehouse aisles: where any extra manoeuvre costs time and space.
- Loading trucks: pallets need to be pushed tightly together inside a truck, a side shift makes this faster and more precise.
- Warehouses with tight shelving systems: where there's little room between pallets.
- Frequent small corrections: if you often find yourself moving back and forth for just a few centimetres.
What to consider before buying?
A side shift mounts onto the fork carriage, so it must match your forklift's carriage size class. Read more in our article on the FEM frame bar, which explains how to check the carriage size.
- Available hydraulics: the forklift needs a free hydraulic outlet to operate the side shift.
- Reduced load capacity: the attachment adds weight and a bit of distance to the carriage, which slightly reduces the forklift's actual load capacity.
- Shift range: different models allow different shift ranges, choose according to your actual need.
Common mistakes
- Not checking the carriage class: the attachment must physically fit the fork carriage.
- Forgetting the hydraulic connection: without suitable hydraulics, the attachment simply sits on the carriage but doesn't move.
- Ignoring load capacity: if the forklift is already loaded near its limit, an added attachment can push it over the allowed limit.
