In short: A FEM frame bar is the upper or lower bar of the fork carriage that the fork hooks and carriage-mounted attachments hang on. The bar's size is tied to the carriage's FEM class (ISO 2328 standard). If the bar is worn, damaged, or the carriage needs widening, the correct-class bar must be replaced or added, not just any tube of a seemingly suitable size.
What is a frame bar and where is it located?
A forklift's fork carriage has a horizontal bar at the top and bottom, onto which the fork hooks latch. These bars carry the entire weight of the load coming through the forks, so their condition and exact dimensions are directly tied to safety.
If you want to know exactly which FEM class your forklift has and how to measure it, read our article on what a forklift's FEM class is, which also includes a class table and a measuring guide.
When is a frame bar actually needed?
- Worn locking notches: years of swapping and using forks wears down the bar where the hooks latch, so the forks no longer sit securely in place.
- Damage: an impact or overload can bend or crack the bar, after which the fork no longer grips properly.
- Widening the carriage: if you want to fit a wider fork or attachment than currently fits on your carriage, you need a longer bar.
What to pay attention to when choosing a bar?
- FEM class: the bar must be exactly the same class as the existing carriage, mixing up the class means the forks won't latch safely.
- Upper or lower bar: these have different dimensions and serve different roles in the carriage, so they can't be swapped for each other.
- Length: the bar must match the carriage's width, with added margin if you want to fit a wider attachment.
Common mistakes
- Guessing the class: a forklift of the same size may have a different carriage class depending on the year of manufacture and model.
- Only looking at length: the bar's diameter and profile must also match the class exactly, not just the length.
- Ignoring a worn bar: if a fork feels "slightly loose" on the carriage, that's often a sign the bar already needs replacing.
When widening the carriage, it's also worth checking whether you need a side shift at the same time, since it mounts on the same carriage.
