In short: Pins and bushings are the core of an attachment's joints, letting a bucket, grapple or fork move with the machine. Regular greasing is the cheapest and simplest maintenance task, yet it's often neglected until play, noise or wear appear, which cost far more to fix.
What pins and bushings are and why they wear
A pin is a metal rod that connects the attachment to the machine or mount through a pivot point, and a bushing is the sleeve around the pin that carries the friction and load. Every movement of the joint creates a little friction, which over time wears down the surface of both the pin and the bushing.
When a joint is properly greased, a film of oil remains between the metal surfaces, significantly reducing direct contact and friction. If greasing is skipped, the surfaces rub directly against each other and wear quickly.
What happens if pins and bushings aren't maintained
- Play develops and worsens: a worn pin or bushing leaves free space in the joint, which creates impact loading and speeds up further wear.
- Noise and vibration: a loose joint produces disruptive noise during work and an uncomfortable feel in the machine.
- Higher repair cost: once the play gets too large, replacing the pin alone is no longer enough, the bushing may need reinstalling or even the mounting ear repairing.
How to grease correctly
- Frequency: grease the joints at the frequency recommended by the manufacturer, more often under heavy work and dusty conditions.
- Clean before greasing: remove old dirt and grease from around the joint before adding new grease.
- Check every joint: a bucket or grapple often has several joints, all of them need attention, not just the most visible one.
When is play already too large
If a joint shows visible free movement despite being properly greased, the pin or bushing is likely already worn and needs replacing. Putting this off puts even more strain on the surrounding parts.
Connection to general maintenance
Pin and bushing maintenance is part of a broader maintenance plan that extends an attachment's overall lifespan. Read more in our article how to extend an attachment's lifespan.
