How to Extend an Attachment's Lifespan - Simple Maintenance Habits

An attachment's lifespan depends a lot on everyday habits. We outline simple maintenance practices that keep buckets, forks and grapples working longer.

In short: An attachment wears out faster if it's overloaded, neglected or stored incorrectly. Regular cleaning, greasing pins and bushings, timely replacement of wear parts and the right technique extend lifespan far more than more expensive raw material alone ever could.

Why lifespan varies so much

Two buckets of the same model, run for the same number of working hours, can be in very different condition. The difference comes down to everyday habits: whether the equipment was cleaned, whether wear parts were replaced on time, and whether the machine was operated so the attachment wasn't constantly overloaded.

Daily habits that help

  • Clean after work: clay, wet soil and plant residue hold moisture at the joints and pins and speed up corrosion. A few minutes of cleaning at the end of the day saves a lot.
  • Grease pins and bushings regularly: this is the cheapest and simplest maintenance task, yet the one most often forgotten. Play that builds up in an ungreased joint worsens quickly.
  • Watch the wear parts: teeth, strips and cutting edges wear naturally with use. Replace them before the wear reaches the base body, and you save the body itself.
  • Avoid overloading: filling the attachment beyond its rated capacity or applying force in the wrong direction (for example twisting the bucket sideways instead of straight) overloads the pins, joints and frame.

Special care for hydraulic attachments

If the attachment has its own hydraulics, for example a tilting bucket or a grapple, a few more checkpoints are added.

  • Hoses and fittings: check regularly for leaks, chafing and cracks, not only once a leak has already appeared.
  • Clean fittings: dirt in a fitting stops it closing properly and lets air or contamination into the system.

Storage during idle periods

When an attachment isn't in use, how and where it's stored matters too. Support the equipment on a level surface, cover bare metal parts with a protective layer, and don't leave it standing in water or snow. You'll find more detail on storage in our article attachment maintenance and winter storage.

Why this matters for Jaegel

A well-maintained attachment retains its value for resale and works efficiently for longer. Our attachment range includes both spare parts (pins, teeth, strips) and entirely new equipment, for when the old one has already served its time. If you're not sure whether an attachment is still worth repairing or whether replacing it makes more sense, just ask us. Get in touch via our contact page.
