In short: An adapter is a connecting piece that lets a telehandler with one mounting system use an attachment with a different system, for example if you want to use a bucket originally designed for another manufacturer's machine. The adapter adds distance and weight between the machine and the attachment, which affects lifting capacity and reach.
When is an adapter needed?
Most telehandler manufacturers use either a common standard mount or their own proprietary system. If a company has machines and attachments from several manufacturers with mismatched mounts, or if you're buying an attachment that fits better on price and quality but not on mounting, an adapter solves that connection.
- A fleet made up of different manufacturers: attachments can be moved between machines even though the mounts differ.
- An older attachment already on hand: the new machine has a different mount, but the old attachment is still in working order.
- Wanting to stay flexible: if you're planning to change machines in the near future, an adapter keeps attachments usable.
What to think about when choosing an adapter?
- Exact fit on both sides: the adapter must fit both the machine's quick coupler and the attachment's mount, both need to be known.
- Added distance and weight: the adapter moves the attachment further from the machine and adds weight, which slightly reduces the machine's actual lifting capacity and reach.
- One-off vs continuous use: if you need the adapter daily, it's worth considering whether it would ultimately make more sense to buy a version of the attachment with the correct mount.
Common mistakes
- Stacking two adapters: using multiple adapters at once makes the attachment unstable and reduces lifting capacity even further.
- Mixing up the mount: similar but not identical mounting systems (for example different manufacturers' own solutions) get confused with each other.
- Forgetting lifting capacity: people forget that the load with an adapter still has to stay within the machine's load chart limits.
If you want to swap attachments more often, also look at the universal bucket and the levelling bucket. You'll find all telehandler attachments in our adapter range. Send us the mounting details of your machine and attachment, and we'll tell you which adapter fits. Ask us via our contact page.
