Farm Attachments - What to Choose for a Tractor and Loader

On a farm, a tractor and loader handle several tasks year-round. We give an overview of which attachments matter most for farm work.

Tractor silage grapples with bale rolls

In short: On a farm, a tractor or loader needs a different attachment for different tasks all year round: feed handling, moving materials, grading surfaces and clearing snow in winter. Most farm owners start with a general-purpose bucket and forks, then add specific equipment as needed.

Why a farm needs several attachments

A single farm machine does very different jobs over the course of a year: hauling material and manure in spring and summer, handling harvest and feed in autumn, clearing snow in winter. One universal attachment doesn't cover all of this well, so it's worth thinking through the farm's most frequent needs.

The most common farm attachments

  • Silage grapples: for grabbing and moving hay bales and silage bales, an important tool on livestock farms.
  • General-purpose and grading buckets: for loading material, keeping roads in order and leveling surfaces, see tractor attachments.
  • Pallet forks: for moving feed bags, pallets and other goods in the barn and yard.
  • Snow-clearing attachments: for keeping roads and yards clear in winter, see more snow-clearing solutions in our general attachment range.

What to consider when choosing

  • Machine mounting system: tractors and loaders have different mounting standards, check which one your machine has before ordering.
  • Year-round use: think through what attachment you'll need in each season, so you can plan purchases in a sensible order.
  • Lift capacity: full silage bales and heavy feed are heavy, make sure the attachment and machine can handle them.

How to get started

If you're buying a farm's first attachments, a common combination is a general-purpose bucket for everyday tasks and a silage grapple if you keep livestock. From there, more specific equipment is added according to the farm's activities, for example needs similar to a construction site or municipal work, which you can read about in our articles construction site attachments and municipal utility attachments.

Common mistakes

  • A universal attachment is bought before the need is clear: it's better to start with one or two frequently used attachments and expand later.
  • The mount isn't checked against the machine's exact model: machines from the same brand can have different mounts depending on the model.
