Construction Site Attachments - From Digging to Moving Materials

On a construction site, an excavator and loader need several different attachments. We give an overview of what to choose for digging and moving materials.

Excavator rock bucket on a construction site

In short: On a construction site, the most common needs are digging, sorting soil, loading material, and leveling the site. A good starting point is a digging bucket and a rock bucket for the excavator, and a general-purpose bucket and grading bucket for the loader. From there, specific equipment is added according to the project's needs.

Why a construction site needs several attachments

A construction project goes through different stages: removing topsoil, digging the foundation, moving material and finishing the site. Each stage needs a different attachment so the work runs efficiently and without wasted time.

The most common construction site attachments

  • Digging bucket: the main tool for digging foundation holes and trenches, see excavator digging buckets.
  • Rock bucket: for sorting stones and coarse material during digging, with fine material falling through the grate, see excavator rock buckets.
  • General-purpose and grading buckets for a loader: for loading material and leveling the site, see loader attachments.
  • Ripper tines and mounts: for breaking up hard ground and securing a quick coupler, choose the right system from our mounts range.

What to consider when choosing

  • Project phase: at the start you mainly need digging and sorting tools, while the finishing phase needs more leveling and loading tools.
  • Soil type: stony, hard ground needs a different attachment than soft soil or sand.
  • Fleet size: if both an excavator and a loader are on site at the same time, split the work between the machines according to their strengths.

Connection to road and municipal work

Some construction site attachments, such as rock buckets and grading buckets, overlap with road and municipal work needs. Read more in our articles road and street maintenance attachments and municipal utility attachments.

Common mistakes

  • Sorting equipment is underestimated: without a rock bucket, stones and debris have to be separated by hand, which stretches out the work significantly.
  • The mounting system isn't checked across machines: if there are several machines on site, make sure the attachments match the right machines.
