In short: Rust forms from the combination of moisture, scratches and lack of maintenance. Simple cleaning, promptly protecting scratched areas, and well-planned storage prevent corrosion far more effectively than repainting to fix damage later.
How rust forms on an attachment
Rust forms when a metal surface comes into contact with moisture and air, and this process speeds up where the surface has scratches that have already damaged the protective paint layer. Attachments that work constantly in soil, clay and damp conditions are especially vulnerable to this, since dirt holds moisture on the surface for longer.
Why corrosion is a problem beyond just appearance
- Material strength weakens: rust eats away at the metal and reduces the structure's strength over time, especially at load-bearing points.
- Joints and mounts suffer: rust around pins and bushings adds a risk of seizing on top of the play it creates.
- Loss of value: a rusty attachment is far harder to resell later at a good price.
How to prevent corrosion
- Clean regularly: remove soil, clay and plant residue that hold moisture on the surface.
- Fix scratches quickly: a scratched spot is a weak point where rust starts. A small amount of paint on a scratch stops rust from spreading.
- Keep it dry and covered: storing under a shelter or indoors carries significantly lower corrosion risk than leaving it out in the open.
- Cover bare metal parts with a layer of oil: especially during idle periods, such as winter, a thin oil film helps keep moisture off the surface.
When full repainting makes sense
If an attachment already has extensive surface rust but the structure itself is sound, full repainting can be a sensible step that extends lifespan and improves appearance. Before painting, old rust and loose paint need to be properly removed, otherwise the new coating won't adhere well and the problem will quickly return.
Connection to winter maintenance
Winter, slush and salty road water are among the riskiest periods for corrosion. Read more about this in our article attachment maintenance and winter storage.
