In short: A mechanical sweeper is a rotating brush drum mounted on the excavator's boom that clears streets, parking lots and yards of sand, dust and small debris. It's a simpler and cheaper solution than a hydraulic sweeper, but also less flexible.
What is a mechanical sweeper and how does it work?
A mechanical sweeper is a drum of bristles that rotates and pushes debris forward or to the side. Unlike a hydraulic sweeper, it often has no separate tilt control or rotation speed adjustment from the cab - it works in one simple mode.
That makes it simpler to maintain and cheaper, but also less flexible than a hydraulic sweeper, where you can adjust angle and speed from the cab.
When does a mechanical sweeper pay off?
- Keeping a construction site tidy: clearing roads and yards of dirt and construction debris as work progresses.
- Cleaning streets and parking lots: removing sand, gravel and debris in spring or after a job.
- Maintaining sidewalks and yards: lighter, routine cleaning work that doesn't require precise control.
If the worksite varies and you often need to change the angle or direction - for example on slopes or in tight street spaces - it's worth considering a hydraulic sweeper, which lets you adjust everything from the cab without leaving the machine.
What else should you check when choosing?
- Brush width: should match the width of the area you typically clean - a brush that's too wide puts more strain on the machine.
- Quick coupler: a mechanical sweeper is ordered to match your machine's quick coupler, just like a bucket.
- Surface type: the brush behaves differently on asphalt and concrete than on a gravel road - very rough surfaces wear the bristles faster.
Other uses for the sweeper
A mechanical sweeper can also be used to clear light snow and slush when there isn't much of it. For larger snow volumes, a bucket or plow is a more practical choice than a brush.
