Hydraulic Sweeper vs. Mechanical Sweeper for Excavators

In short: A hydraulic sweeper draws its power from the machine's hydraulic system, and its angle or direction can be adjusted from the cab. A mechanical sweeper works more simply and is cheaper, but less flexible. The choice depends on how often and how variably you use the sweeper.

What is the main difference?

Both are rotating-brush cleaning attachments that mount on the excavator's quick coupler. The difference lies in control and extra functions:

• Hydraulic sweeper: the brush rotates using the machine's hydraulic system, and you can often change the tilt or direction from the cab. This gives more precise control on slopes and in tight spaces.
• Mechanical sweeper: a simpler build, with limited or no adjustment from the cab. Suited to uniform, repetitive cleaning work.

When does a hydraulic sweeper pay off?

• Varied surfaces: if you clean areas with different slopes and widths, an adjustable angle can significantly speed up the work.
• Heavy use: if the sweeper is in daily use, the more flexible and precise solution is worth the extra cost.
• Work that needs precision: cleaning edges and corners, where the brush position matters.

When is a mechanical sweeper enough?

If you only need a sweeper occasionally for simpler cleaning jobs - say, keeping a construction site tidy or seasonal parking lot cleanup - a mechanical sweeper is cheaper and sufficient. The extra functions of a hydraulic sweeper would simply go unused.

What else should you check?

• Machine hydraulics: a hydraulic sweeper needs an extra outlet on the machine (for example return-flow auxiliary hydraulics). Check that your machine has one.
• Brush width and quick coupler: the same principles apply as with buckets - size and mount must match the machine.
