In short: A crane jib is an attachment mounted in place of the bucket that turns the excavator into a light lifting machine - pipes, pallets, frames and other materials can be lifted and placed precisely without hiring a separate crane.
What is a crane jib?
A crane jib is a boom structure with a hook or lifting eye that mounts on the excavator's quick coupler, just like a bucket. Instead of digging, you use it to move material from one spot to another - for example, placing a pipe section in a trench or lifting a heavy pallet onto a site.
When does a crane jib speed up the work?
- Pipeline construction: lifting and placing pipe sections into an excavated trench without relying on manual labor.
- Relocating material on site: lifting heavy pallets, frames or panels, where hiring a separate crane would be overkill.
- Building and fence assembly: light lifting work on a construction site where the machine is already on hand.
The advantage of a crane jib is that a machine already on the job can handle the lift in the same pass - no need to arrange a separate crane and wait for it to arrive on site.
What should you pay attention to?
- Lifting capacity and reach: matters depending on how heavy and how far you're lifting a load. With a crane jib you always work within the machine's rated limits, which are lower than when digging with a bucket.
- Mount: the crane jib must match the machine's quick coupler, just like a bucket.
- Safety: lifting work follows different rules than digging - securing the load and watching the surrounding area matter more than when digging.
Crane jib vs. grapple
If the material being lifted is logs, stones or waste that's easier to grab than to lift with a loop or hook, a grapple is a better fit. A crane jib works best when the material is already prepared for lifting, for example with a hook or sling.
