Excavator Grapple - Lifting Logs and Stones in One Motion

A grapple grabs and holds logs, stones and debris without extra slings. See when it's a faster and safer solution than a bucket.

Excavator grapple lifting a log

In short: A grapple is an attachment with jaws that grabs and holds logs, stones, debris and other uneven material. Unlike a bucket, the material doesn't need to be separately secured to lift it - the grapple holds the load between its closing arms.

What is a grapple and how does it differ from a bucket?

A grapple has two or more moving jaws that close hydraulically around the load. Unlike a bucket, where material is simply thrown or scooped in, a grapple physically holds the material in place - important for uneven shapes and uneven weight distribution, such as logs or large stones.

When is a grapple better than a bucket?

  • Lifting logs and trunks: in forestry work and clearing felled areas, a grapple is more precise and faster than pushing material with a bucket.
  • Large stones and boulders: a bucket pushes or rolls them, while a grapple lifts and places them exactly where needed.
  • Handling waste and debris: construction waste, wood waste and other uneven material that's easier to grab in a load than to scoop up.

Grapple vs. tree shear

If the job is cutting and clearing trees and brush, rather than lifting material that's already been cut, a tree shear is the better fit. The two are often used together: wood cut with the shear is then collected with the grapple.

What should you check when choosing?

  • Opening width: must match the typical dimensions of the material you lift - a grapple that's too small can't grab thicker logs.
  • Rotation function: some grapples offer 360-degree rotation, which helps position the load more precisely without moving the machine.
  • Quick coupler: a grapple is ordered to match your machine's quick coupler.
