In short: A digging bucket is a closed bucket suited to everyday digging and loading. A skeleton bucket has bars that let finer soil pass through while stones, roots and debris stay inside. They complement each other rather than replace one another.
Digging bucket - the machine's main tool
If a machine has only one bucket, it's almost always a digging bucket. It's a closed bucket, usually fitted with teeth, used for digging foundation pits, trenches and loading soil. A closed bottom means the bucket holds onto everything that goes in, including finer soil.
See our range on the excavator digging buckets page.
Skeleton bucket - when stones need to be separated out
A skeleton bucket's walls and floor are made of bars or a grid. As you lift and shake the soil in the bucket, finer material falls back through the gaps, while larger stones, root fragments and debris stay inside. That lets you load them separately onto a truck or into a pile, without carrying off usable soil at the same time.
- Clearing stony ground: preparing fields or green areas where the soil is stony.
- Sorting demolition debris: separating larger pieces from finer material.
- Composting and soil screening: for smaller volumes in garden work.
When to use which?
For ordinary digging or loading work, a digging bucket is enough. If the ground is noticeably stony or you need to separate out larger chunks, it's worth getting a skeleton bucket as well - you swap it onto the quick coupler in place of the digging bucket and keep working with the same machine.
If the goal is less about screening and more about leveling the surface, a screening bucket or a similar rake designed for screening and finishing is often a better fit.
Common mistakes
- Using a skeleton bucket for initial digging: a bucket with bars doesn't penetrate hard ground as well as a closed digging bucket.
- Wrong size for the machine: a full load of heavy soil in a skeleton bucket has a different center of gravity than a closed bucket - choose a size that matches the machine's weight.
