Excavator Screening Bucket - When Do You Need One?

A screening bucket sifts stones and roots out of the soil and leaves a level, even surface behind. See when it beats a digging bucket or a grading bucket.

Excavator screening bucket leveling soil

In short: A screening bucket is a bucket fitted with bars or a grid that lets finer soil pass through while stones, roots and debris stay inside. It lets you level ground meant for landscaping in a single pass, instead of digging, screening and leveling with separate tools.

What is a screening bucket?

A screening bucket looks like a digging bucket, but instead of a solid floor and sides it has bars or a grid. As you lift and shake the soil inside the bucket, the finer material falls back through onto the ground, while larger stones and root fragments stay in the bucket, ready to be dumped or loaded separately.

The result is an even, stone-free surface layer, ready for seeding grass, planting, or laying paving.

When is a screening bucket the right choice?

  • Landscaping on a new development: soil on a post-construction plot is often stony and mixed. A screening bucket sorts it out on site, without hauling in new topsoil.
  • Renovating an old lawn area: if the ground is uneven and full of stones, a screening bucket quickly prepares it for landscaping.
  • Small screening jobs: compost, sand or soil mixes where you want to sift out larger chunks before use.

If you need to dig deep or the ground is very hard, start with a regular digging bucket. A screening bucket is a finishing tool, not one for the initial excavation.

Screening bucket vs. rake vs. grading bucket

These three are easily confused, but each does a different job.

  • Screening bucket: separates soil from heavier material, leaving a finer-structured surface afterward.
  • Rake: a similar idea, but with wider-spaced tines, better for sorting out stones and roots from larger volumes - see our article on rakes.
  • Grading bucket: a smooth, wide bucket suited to creating a flat surface, but it doesn't screen anything out - see our range of grading buckets.

If you need both to screen stones and level the surface, it often makes sense to split the job: a screening bucket or rake first to remove stones, then a grading bucket to finish.

What else should you consider?

A screening bucket fits most machines with S-system quick couplers, but the size must match the machine's weight - a bucket that's too wide makes lifting and shaking hard on the machine. If you're not sure which quick coupler you have, measure it before ordering.
