What Is a WD Bucket and When Do You Need One?

A WD bucket is a reinforced digging bucket built for heavy, stony ground. See how it differs from a standard digging bucket.

In short: A WD bucket is a reinforced version of a standard digging bucket, built to handle harder, stonier ground. Its construction is heavier and uses more steel than a standard bucket, so it can withstand greater loads.

How does a WD bucket differ from a standard bucket?

An everyday digging bucket is designed for ordinary soil and mixed ground. A WD-series bucket is built from stronger steel, often with reinforced side plates and heavier fittings, giving it greater resistance to harder, stonier ground and compacted gravel.

The difference isn't in how it digs - both dig and load soil the same way - but in durability. A WD bucket withstands more load before wearing down or getting damaged.

When is a WD bucket a sensible choice?

  • Stony and hard ground: gravel pits, stony fields, road construction, where the ground is much harder than standard soil.
  • Heavy daily use: when the machine is constantly at work and the bucket takes more wear than usual.
  • Demolition and gravel work: material that would quickly wear out a standard bucket.

If the ground is ordinary soil and use is moderate, a standard digging bucket is enough - a WD bucket pays off specifically in tough conditions, where durability matters more than weight.

WD bucket vs. ripper teeth

If the ground is so hard that even a reinforced bucket can't simply penetrate it, it's worth considering ripper teeth, designed specifically for breaking up hard, stony or overgrown ground before digging.

What else should you consider?

  • Machine weight: a WD bucket is heavier than a standard bucket of the same capacity - check that the machine can carry the extra weight.
  • Quick coupler: the same rules apply as with other buckets - it must match the machine's quick coupler.
