In short: A bale grapple grips a round bale from both sides without piercing the wrap, and lets you turn the bale if needed. If you handle wrapped silage bales and care about keeping the wrap intact, a grapple is often the better choice over a simple bale spear.
What is a bale grapple and why is it needed?
The grapple mounts on the tractor's front loader boom and grips the round bale externally using arms or a frame. Gripping is hydraulic and controlled from the cab.
- Keeps the wrap intact: the film on wrapped silage bales doesn't get punctured, which matters for preserving silage quality and shelf life.
- Can turn the bale: some grapples let you turn the bale onto its side, handy for lining bales up in storage.
- Safer lifting: no need to spear the bale, reducing the risk of visual damage and uneven balance.
See the range on our tractor bale grapples page.
Who is a tractor bale grapple suited for?
- Silage bale producers and livestock farmers: who care about the quality of wrapped bales.
- Those handling larger bale volumes: where bales need to be stacked tightly and correctly in storage.
- Machines used frequently: the convenience of a hydraulic grapple pays off especially for frequent, repetitive work.
What should you think about before buying?
- Hydraulics available: the grapple needs auxiliary hydraulics on the tractor to close - check it's available and the couplings match.
- Grip range: must suit the typical bale diameter used on the farm.
- Mount compatibility: the grapple must match the tractor's front loader mount, such as Euro or SMS, see our tractor attachments.
Bale grapple or bale spear?
For simpler and faster handling of individual hay bales that don't carry wrap, a bale spear is still a cheaper and faster solution. A more detailed comparison for the version used on skid steers can be found in our bale spear vs bale grapple for a skid steer article, and its logic applies to tractors too.
