In short: A carpet boom is a bar that's pushed through the core of a roll (carpet, film, roofing material, turf rolls), after which the roll can be lifted and moved without being crushed. The bar's length and diameter must match the dimensions and weight of the roll's core.
Why can't a roll be lifted with the forks?
A regular fork supports the roll from below, and gravity presses the roll flat onto the fork under its own weight, especially with softer material such as carpet or film. This damages the material and makes the roll unstable. A carpet boom passes through the centre of the roll's core, so the roll stays round and balanced.
What to pay attention to when choosing?
- Bar diameter: must fit inside the roll's core, but be thick enough that the roll doesn't wobble on the bar.
- Bar length: must match the roll's length. Too short a bar leaves one end of the roll unsupported, too long a bar is unnecessarily heavy and awkward to handle.
- Capacity: rolled material can be heavier than it first appears, especially damp roofing material or a dense turf roll.
- Mounting on the forks: the carpet boom's attachment to the fork must be secure, so it doesn't slip while driving.
Where is a carpet boom most commonly used?
- Flooring and carpet storage: moving rolls in a warehouse and on an installation site.
- Construction materials: film rolls, waterproofing material, roofing coverings.
- Landscaping: moving turf rolls to a site.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the wrong diameter: too thin a bar lets the roll spin and slip on it.
- Underestimating weight: a long, damp roll is heavier than you might think when imagining dry, short material.
- Unbalanced placement: if the roll is shifted toward one end on the bar, the load tilts while moving.
For moving liquids and heavy drums, a drum lifter and drum rotator is a better fit. You'll find all forklift attachments in our carpet boom range. Send us the roll's dimensions and weight, and we'll recommend the right model. Ask us via our contact page.
