In short: Safety mirrors are mounted on the forklift's mast, around the cab, or at turning points in the warehouse, to reduce blind spots. A convex mirror gives a wider field of view than a regular flat mirror, and a mast-mounted mirror helps you see past the load when the view straight ahead is blocked by cargo.
Why is visibility a risk factor when working with a forklift?
When driving with a load, the operator's view straight ahead is often blocked by the cargo itself. In addition, warehouse aisles often have turns and crossings where another forklift, a cart operator or a pedestrian can appear unexpectedly. Many warehouse accidents happen precisely because someone wasn't seen half a second earlier, not because of a driving error.
Which mirror types are common?
- Convex mirrors: give a wider field of view and suit turning points and watching narrow gaps between shelves well.
- Mast-mounted mirrors: fitted to the mast, help see the area behind the load when the forks are loaded and the view straight ahead is limited.
- Cab-mounted mirrors: complement the operator's direct view to the rear or side.
How to choose the right mirror and position?
- The specific blind spot: think through exactly where visibility is lacking before ordering a mirror, rather than going for "more mirrors in general".
- Mounting location: make sure the mirror can be fitted so it doesn't itself block the load, mast movement or the cab door.
- Aisle crossings: at crossings of narrow aisles, it's worth mounting mirrors on the warehouse wall or shelving, not only on the forklift.
Common mistakes
- Wrong mounting position: a poorly placed mirror blocks the view more than it helps.
- A one-sided solution: forklift mirrors alone aren't enough if aisle crossings are frequent, a stationary mirror is also needed there.
- Unmaintained mirrors: a dusty or scratched mirror doesn't serve its purpose.
Proper use of a lifting cage also helps improve safety for jobs at height and with limited visibility. You'll find all forklift attachments in our safety mirror range. Describe your warehouse layout and blind spots, and we'll recommend a suitable solution. Ask us via our contact page.
