Snow Chains Stud vs Straight for Forklifts - What's the Difference?

In short: A snow chain fits over the forklift's tyre to improve grip on snow and ice. A Straight-pattern chain gives a smoother, slightly gentler grip, while a Stud-pattern chain grips more, since its links sit on the tyre more diagonally and densely. The choice depends more on the situation the forklift is used in than on tyre size alone.

Why fit snow chains to a forklift at all?

Forklifts are built for indoor use or smooth asphalt, not slippery snow and ice. If a forklift has to be used outdoors in winter, for example when loading a truck or on the yard in front of a warehouse, a snow chain significantly improves grip and reduces the risk of slipping while moving with a load.

Stud and Straight - what's the difference?

• Straight (ladder) pattern: links run across the tyre rather than diagonally, the pattern is more even and slightly gentler. Works well for light anti-slip protection on flat, lightly snow-covered ground.
• Stud pattern: links sit more densely and diagonally, giving better grip on deeper snow and ice. Suits harsher winter conditions.

Put simply: Straight is lighter everyday protection, Stud is the stronger solution for situations where conditions are genuinely slippery.

What else to consider when choosing?

• Tyre size: the chain must match the forklift's tyre size exactly, not just "roughly" the right size.
• Operating environment: if the forklift mostly runs in a dry warehouse and goes outside rarely, a lighter solution is enough. If there's a lot of outdoor driving, it's worth choosing the Stud version straight away.
• Tension: the chain must be tightened properly when fitted, a loose chain wears out faster and can damage the tyre.

Common mistakes

• Wrong tyre size: the chain doesn't sit properly and slips on the tyre.
• Continued use on dry asphalt: a snow chain wears out quickly if driven for long stretches on slip-free ground.
• Not tightening it: a loose chain can damage the tyre and rim.
