Tipping Containers for Forklifts - Transporting Bulk and Liquid Materials

Tipping containers help forklifts safely transport and store bulk and liquid materials. We explain what to consider when choosing a container.

Tipping container moved by a forklift

In short: A tipping container is a fork-handled vessel whose bottom, lid or side wall opens to unload the contents in a controlled way. These suit bulk and waste materials, grain-like substances, and partly also liquids. Choose a container based on its material, opening mechanism and volume, not just its outer shape.

What are tipping containers used for?

A regular closed box has no convenient way to unload its contents, it has to be emptied by hand or the whole box tipped over. A tipping container solves this: the contents can be emptied while the container is lifted by crane or forklift, by opening the lid or releasing the bottom, depending on the model.

Typical uses include waste handling, collecting production residue, transporting feed and grain-like materials, and handling certain industrial waste and liquids.

What to pay attention to when choosing?

  • Material suitability: if the content is corrosive, acidic or chemically active, you need to check the container material's resistance rather than assume "a metal container suits everything".
  • Opening mechanism: bottom-opening, lid-opening or side-wall opening, each suits a different work process and unloading location.
  • Capacity and weight when full: consider whether the forklift can lift and carry the full container the intended distance.
  • Locking during transport: the opening mechanism must be securely locked while driving, so the contents don't spill out prematurely.

How does this relate to other Jaegel attachments?

If the material you're transporting is in bulk bags rather than a container, also look at the Big Bag lifter. For transporting and transferring liquids where the packaging is a drum, a drum lifter and drum rotator is a better fit.

Common mistakes

  • Not checking material compatibility: a material unsuitable for the chemical involved wears out or leaks quickly.
  • Forgetting to lock it: the opening mechanism must be firmly closed while driving.
  • Choosing the wrong volume: too large a container puts a load on the forklift that the load chart doesn't allow.
