In short: A wheel loader is faster and more stable for close-range work, such as loading and mixing material. A telehandler reaches higher and further, making it better suited to high stacking and lifting pallets onto a high shelf or a trailer.
What the real difference between the machines is
A wheel loader moves its whole body to move the bucket, and mostly loads straight ahead or next to a truck. Its advantage is maneuverability and speed over short distances. A telehandler has an extendable boom, which gives considerably greater lift height and reach without the machine having to move.
- Wheel loader: fast and agile, good for loading and mixing material close by.
- Telehandler: reaches higher and further, good for high storage and loading trailers.
How this affects attachment choice
Most attachments - forks, buckets, grapples - fit both machines in principle, as long as the mount matches. The difference comes from how the attachment is actually used: on a telehandler, the attachment often works with an extended boom, meaning the load's center of gravity is further from the machine and stability matters more.
- Pallet forks: especially common on telehandlers, since the large lift height is used specifically for stacking pallets high.
- Buckets: on a wheel loader, the bucket is the main attachment for everyday loading and moving material.
- Grapples: useful on both machines, but on a telehandler more attention needs to go into holding the load securely, since the boom is longer.

What to check regarding the mount
Telehandlers and wheel loaders don't always have the same mount, even between models from the same manufacturer. Before ordering an attachment, you need to establish which quick coupler the machine has - exactly as with excavator attachments. An attachment with the wrong mount won't lock reliably, whether the machine is a wheel loader or a telehandler.
Which machine to invest in
If most of the work is close-range loading and moving material, a wheel loader is usually the more sensible and cheaper choice. If you need high storage, loading trailers, or work where lift height is critical, a telehandler is worth considering, even if it's a bigger initial investment.
