Rent or Buy an Attachment - When Each Option Pays Off

Renting and buying suit different situations. We explain which factors drive the decision and when buying an attachment pays off.

In short: Renting suits a short, one-off job when you don't plan to use the attachment often. Buying pays off when you need the same attachment repeatedly, since long-term rental often ends up costing more than ownership overall, and a rented unit isn't always exactly what you need.

What the decision depends on

Choosing between renting and buying isn't only a question of price. Usage frequency, project length, the attachment's availability at a rental company, and how precisely a rented unit matches your needs all matter too.

When renting makes sense

  • A one-off or rare job: for example, a special-purpose piece of equipment you use once a year isn't worth buying.
  • A short-term project: if the work lasts a couple of weeks and you won't need the attachment afterward, renting saves you storage and maintenance costs.
  • You need to test the equipment: before a major purchase, it makes sense to try renting first to see whether the attachment suits the work and the machine.
  • An unexpected extra need: when a one-off requirement comes up in a project that wasn't originally planned for.

When buying pays off

  • Repeated use: if you need the attachment weekly or even daily, rental costs quickly add up to close to, or above, the purchase price.
  • You need the equipment on hand: your own equipment has no waiting list or rental schedule, giving independence to your work timeline.
  • A specific requirement: if you need a particular size or mount that rental companies often don't have in stock, buying is the more sensible option.
  • Retained value: a well-maintained attachment can be resold later, while rental money never comes back.

Used or new equipment, if you decide to buy

If you conclude that buying makes more sense for you, it's also worth considering whether a new or used attachment suits better. We cover this in more detail in our article used or new attachment.

Quick guide

  • Used less than a few times a year: consider renting.
  • Repeated or daily use: buying is usually cheaper in the long run.
  • Specific mount or size: buy, since rental options are often limited.
  • Unclear need: try renting first, decide on buying once things are clearer.
