Forestry Attachments - From Brush Cutters to Log Grapples

Forestry work uses several different attachments on excavators and loaders. We give an overview of what to choose and when.

Excavator brush cutter at a felling site

In short: In forestry and felling work, a machine often needs more than one attachment: a brush cutter for felling, a log grapple for moving material, and in some cases a digging bucket for clearing the area. The right choice depends on whether you're clearing land, hauling logs, or tidying up a site.

Why forestry needs different attachments

Felling work consists of several stages: felling trees and brush, moving material, and clearing the site. Each stage needs a different tool, and in most cases they complement rather than replace one another.

The most common forestry attachments

  • Brush cutter: mounted on the end of an excavator's boom, cuts trees and brush quickly, suited for clearing land and sites before other work.
  • Log grapple: designed for grabbing and moving logs and thick trees, suits both excavators and loaders.
  • Digging bucket: for clearing areas after felling, removing stumps and roots, see excavator digging buckets.
  • Ripper tines: help pull roots and stumps out of the ground before the area can be put to further use.

What to consider when choosing an attachment

  • Machine size and lift capacity: brush cutters and log grapples are heavier attachments and need corresponding power and stability from the machine.
  • Hydraulics: cutters and grapples need hydraulics to work, check the machine outlet's flow rate and pressure.
  • Mounting system: the mount needs to match the machine's quick coupler exactly, see all the options among our excavator mounts.
  • Nature of the work: dense brush and small trees call for a different solution than moving thick logs.

Common mistakes

  • One attachment for everything: a brush cutter doesn't suit log handling and vice versa, each stage of work needs its own equipment.
  • Machine power isn't checked: heavier forestry attachments need more machine power than ordinary earthwork.
  • Hydraulics aren't checked in advance: equipment that doesn't get enough flow works slowly or inefficiently.
