In short: A ditching bucket is shaped like a small V- or U-profile channel, suited to digging a new ditch and cleaning the base and slopes of an existing one. It produces a more even ditch profile than a regular digging bucket.
What sets a ditching bucket apart from a regular digging bucket?
A regular digging bucket is built for general digging and loading - its shape isn't meant to produce a clean, even ditch. A ditching bucket's curved or V-shaped floor leaves behind a smooth ditch profile suited to proper water drainage.
Unlike a wide grading bucket, which suits flat areas and slopes, a ditching bucket is designed specifically for shaping the base and sides of a ditch - narrower and profiled.
When do you need a ditching bucket?
- Agriculture: maintaining drainage ditches and digging new ones so water drains properly off the field.
- Road maintenance: cleaning and restoring roadside ditches so water doesn't pool on the road surface.
- Property drainage: ditches for draining stormwater on residential or industrial sites.
How do you choose the right size?
The ditching bucket's width and profile must match the desired ditch dimensions as well as the machine's weight and digging depth. A bucket that's too large puts excessive strain on the machine, while one that's too narrow won't produce the desired ditch profile.
- Ditch depth and base width: consider how deep the ditch needs to be and what width of base you need.
- Quick coupler: the bucket must match the machine's quick coupler, just like with other buckets.
A common mistake
A ditching bucket is sometimes used for ordinary digging, where a regular digging bucket would be better suited. A specifically shaped bucket isn't a general-purpose tool - if the work varies, it's worth keeping both buckets on hand and switching between them as needed.
