Containers for Wheel Loaders - Which to Choose and What to Use Them For?

Wheel loader containers are suited to hauling and storing loose and liquid material. See which container type fits which job.

Wheel loader container moving material

In short: A wheel loader container is a closed or semi-closed vessel used to haul, store and tip material without a separate vehicle. Different container types suit different purposes, depending on the material and the nature of the work.

Why a container, when there's already a bucket?

A regular loader bucket is well suited to loading material and moving it over short distances. A container is a standalone vessel that a loader can lift, move and sometimes tip - useful when material needs to sit separately for a while, for example during storage or when transporting it between sites.

What container types are common?

  • Tipping container: can be tilted by the loader to pour material where needed - suited to gravel, sand and other loose material.
  • Closed container: keeps material covered with a lid, suited to hauling waste or dusty material.
  • Open transport container: the simplest option for moving dry, lumpy material over a short distance.

Which container suits which job?

If you're handling gravel, sand or other loose material that needs to be repeatedly poured in different spots, a tipping container is the best fit - it saves manual shoveling. If the material is dusty or mustn't spill to avoid mixing, a closed container makes more sense. For a simple, one-off move, an open container is enough.

What should you check when choosing?

  • Capacity: must match the typical volume of material and the loader's lifting capacity.
  • Mount: the container must match your loader's mount, just like a bucket.
  • Material type: think about what you're actually hauling and storing - that determines whether the container should be closed, tippable, or simply open.
