Handling Aggregate and Sand - Why a Light Material Bucket Holds More Than a Standard Bucket

Hauling aggregate and sand goes faster with a larger bucket, since these materials are light. We explain why a light material bucket holds more volume and when it pays off.

Loader light material bucket loading sand

In short: A bucket's volume is ultimately limited by the machine's lifting capacity and stability, not by the bucket's size on its own. Since sand and aggregate are lighter than, say, wet clay, the same machine can carry a larger bucket when it's used specifically with these materials. That's why a light material bucket holds more than a standard bucket.

What a light material bucket is

A light material bucket is wider and holds more than a machine's standard loading bucket, because it's designed for light, free-flowing materials: sand, aggregate, wood chips, lightweight gravel and dry soil. The wall height and bucket shape are built so a large volume of material fits in at once, without making the bucket too heavy for the machine.

See the range on our light material buckets page.

Why a standard bucket is slower with aggregate and sand

  • Smaller volume: a standard bucket is sized for heavier materials, such as wet soil or stones, so part of the machine's lifting capacity goes unused with light materials.
  • More cycles: a smaller bucket means more back-and-forth trips to load the same amount of sand or aggregate.
  • More time and fuel: more cycles means more engine running time and a longer working day for the same volumes.

When a light material bucket pays off

If you load sand, aggregate or wood chips regularly and in large quantities, for example in road building, base preparation or delivery, a light material bucket clearly pays off. If the machine is used for mixed work - sometimes digging, sometimes hauling light materials - a standard loading bucket may be the more sensible all-around choice, see our loading bucket range.

What to pay attention to when ordering a bucket

  • Machine lifting capacity: check how large a load the machine can lift stably with a full bucket before choosing the largest available volume.
  • Mount compatibility: the bucket must match the machine's quick coupler exactly, whether that's SMS, Euro, Big BM or another system.
  • Material moisture: wet sand is considerably heavier than dry sand - if the material is often wet, it's worth leaving some margin when choosing the volume.
