Stump Grapple for a Skid Steer - Removing Shrubs and Stumps

A stump grapple helps a skid steer remove shrubs, stumps and root systems when clearing a plot. We look at how this attachment works and what to consider.

Stump grapple for a skid steer

In short: A stump grapple is a grapple with strong curved tines that penetrate the ground and between roots, levering shrubs, stumps and root systems loose along with the soil, so they can then be collected. It's a faster and more thorough solution than scraping with a digging bucket.

What is a stump grapple and when do you need one?

A stump grapple consists of a frame and several strong, downward-curved tines that are driven into the ground, prying loose the material caught between them as the machine moves. Some models close hydraulically, which helps grip and collect roots and stumps.

  • Removing shrubs and brush: for example when clearing a plot or expanding farmland.
  • Levering out stumps and root systems: left behind after felling trees.
  • Sorting stones and larger clumps of soil: finer soil slips through between the tines, while larger pieces stay on top.

Who is a stump grapple suited for?

  • Landscaping and property maintenance companies: clearing a plot before construction work.
  • Farmers: clearing new farmland and field edges.
  • Construction site preparation contractors: vegetation and roots must be removed before grading.

What should you think about before buying?

  • Tine strength and spacing: must withstand repeated prying in hard and stony ground.
  • Hydraulic requirement: a closing stump grapple needs auxiliary hydraulics on the machine - check it's available.
  • Machine power: prying out roots and stumps puts more strain on the machine than regular digging.
  • Mount compatibility: the grapple must fit the machine's quick-attach, see our loader mounts.

For moving larger logs and trunks after they've been pried loose, it's worth keeping a log grapple on hand. If you're also using an excavator on the same site, check out the ripper teeth built for ripping work, which suit hard ground and root removal.
