Excavator vs Mini Excavator - Do Attachments Fit Both?

An excavator and a mini excavator have different weight and mount size, which directly affects attachment choice. We explain how to choose an attachment that fits both.

In short: A mini excavator is smaller and lighter, which also means a smaller mount and lower-volume buckets, since the weight has to stay within what the machine can handle. Most attachment principles apply to both, but size and mount need to be chosen separately for each machine.

What's the difference between a mini excavator and a standard excavator

A mini excavator is a more compact machine, used in confined spaces, for example in indoor and garden work, basements and narrow streets. A standard excavator is bigger, heavier and stronger, so it can dig deeper and lift more at once.

  • Weight and mount: a mini excavator usually has a smaller quick coupler, for example S30, while a larger excavator has S45 and up.
  • Bucket volume: buckets for a mini excavator have a smaller volume, since the machine has less lifting power and can't afford to tip over easily.
  • Access: a mini excavator fits into tight spaces that a large excavator can't reach.

Do attachments fit both?

In principle, the same attachment types - digging buckets, grading buckets, grapples - fit both machine classes, but in different sizes. One attachment usually won't work on both machines if the mount and bucket volume differ. The exception is when the two machines' quick couplers happen to be the same size, for example some smaller standard excavators that use the same S30 or S40 mount as larger mini excavators.

  • Digging buckets: choose by the volume and width that match the specific machine's quick coupler, see our digging bucket range.
  • Mounts and adapters: if you plan to use an attachment on two differently sized machines, look at combi mount options on our excavator mounts page.

What to pay attention to when choosing attachments for a mini excavator

  • Don't choose too large a bucket: a large, full bucket can easily make a mini excavator unstable, especially on slopes.
  • Check the exact mount size: don't go by the machine's overall weight - measure the quick coupler or ask us for the machine's make and model.
  • Account for access: if you're working in a confined space, choose an attachment that doesn't make the machine too wide.

Tell us whether it's a mini excavator or a larger excavator, along with the machine's make and model, and we'll recommend an attachment of the right size. You can also browse all our excavator attachments or get in touch via our contact page.
